I always love seeing people's before and after pictures of home renovations. we've been in this old house for a year and a half now, and though we have a long, long way to go, we've also come so very far. check it out below!

the theme for this house when our offer got approved nearly two years ago, was light and bright! it was really dark and run down when we first saw it. we wanted white bright walls and dark wood floors to really show off the character and age of the home. it's a traditional dutch colonial from the early 1900's and we wanted to keep it as original as possible. one of the first things we did was rip up the upstairs carpet to reveal the beauty of the floors. we went with a really dark stain and the walls we painted white. my favorite room in the house is Dune and Lars' room that Jonathan worked on last summer when we spent the month in Florida. i wanted a black wall somewhere in the house and decided that it would work best for them. no, it's not chalk board paint, it's actually just a matte black paint. and the picture doesn't do anything for how that room feels to actually be standing in it.

we've run into so many issues with our home. like some of the paint just won't stick. it will peel after 10 times of trying. so in some rooms we've actually committed to just living with peeling paint. other rooms like the kitchen we only wanted to put a little bit of money into until, if ever, we decide to knock down a wall or two to make it bigger. there are other problems, like the house not being insulated, needing a new boiler, replacing eventually every window in the house. but for now, we love it. we love seeing our vision come to life. we love building up a pre existing home and personalizing it. sometimes when the fire is lit and all the kids have gone to bed and jonathan and i are just sitting in the family room, my mind will be blown that perhaps at some point in our house's history a newspaper was delivered with news of WWII or Kennedy being shot. this house is a gem, the life that was once here and the life that fills it now. and we want to honor that.

another feature of our home and it may be my favorite, is that a gardener lived here. i've come into a yard that was deeply cared for and tended to and details of that are all over. in every season there is a surprise, a bursting forth of the ground, to remind me of the value in the land on which she stands.

this summer we have two main goals we want to achieve. we are renovating the upstairs hallway and turning it into a room that i will use primarily to homeschool Graycen, and the boys. and tending to the beginnings of our own garden. and along the way, our most treasured and valuable reminder when it comes to this old house is to enjoy it. and that, that we are. i hope you enjoyed it too!
